450 miles isn't really that long, is it?

I've always loved being outdoors. Living in Oregon makes it hard not to. But I want to do more than just stroll around the neighborhood.

One day when I was having one of my random visits from the insomnia fairy, I stumbled upon an article about the Pacific Crest Trail. One thing led to another, and I was enchanted by the articles, blogs and whatever information I could get about the PCT and people's experiences. One blog caught my eye. Sadly I didn't bookmark it, but it was about a family from Europe who thru-hiked the PCT. The two children were only 10 and 13! That's a long way for such young hikers to go (over 2,600 miles)

That got me thinking, if they could do it, why not my family? While I would love to do a thru-hike, our schedule just doesn't allow for it. But what about just a portion of it? So I decided that we should hike the Oregon section, which brings the total down to about 450 miles. Still a long hike, we'll be gone about a month.

My youngest is only 6, and for some reason that 10 year mark really stuck with me, so we'll be waiting until the summer of 2020, when she is 10. That gives us a whole lot of time to prepare, train, learn how to do all of this stuff that will make our endeavor a success. My children have no real hiking experience, and my own experience is limited to a 3-day hike almost 25 years ago, so we're all newbies, and can use the time.

Stay tuned for updates on what we're doing to get ready!
